A Message From The
Chairman of the
Parks Board
January
2010
As quickly as autumn leaves are changing, so have
the past seven years of serving on the Parks Board gone by for me! Being a
member of the Parks Board has been a rewarding experience that has given me the
opportunity to learn so much about our wondrous York County Parks.
Over the past seven years, many exciting milestones
have taken place within the York County Parks — a maintenance complex was built
at John Rudy Park, park visitation reached 1,000,000 annual visitors in 2006,
the Northern Extension of the Rail Trail (Phase 1) was completed, Apollo Park
expanded by 191 acres, Highpoint Scenic Vista was designated as the tenth County
Park, and the 13.5-acre Canine Meadows off-leash dog area was opened. These are
just a few of the accomplishments that come to mind, with there being so many
more I could add to this list!
My most rewarding experience however has been the
people that I have met and come to know while serving on the Parks Board. The
York County Parks staff is truly an amazing group of extremely dedicated
individuals. Faced with the daunting task of managing 4,000-plus acres that
comprise all of the Parks, the Parks staff members accept this challenge with a
smile. Also contributing to the successes of the Parks are our diehard
volunteers. These very special people offer their time and assistance because
they realize our Parks are an invaluable resource and they understand the
importance of giving back to the Parks.
As York County continues to grow, more and more people
will seek out the peaceful solitude and beauty of our Parks. With that in mind,
there will be both opportunities and challenges in the future. But with the
staff members and volunteers we have supporting our York County Parks, the best
is yet to come!
It has been my pleasure to serve all of you!
