Saturday, November 5; Fossils and More Fossils
Bus Trip
Nixon Park, 9am–4pm
Join Parks Program Coordinator Jeri Jones and travel via coach bus first to
Bear Valley in Schulykill County to collect 320-million-year-old fern
fossils and petrified wood. While there, view one of the most spectacular
examples of geologic folding in the country. Next travel to Swarata State
Park in Lebanon County and collect fossils that were originally sea
creatures about 350 million years ago. Participants should bring their
lunch, beverage, hammers, collecting bags, cameras, and chisels (optional).
$40 for Parks members, $50 for non-members. Register at 840-7440.

Book Sale

A great selection of field guides for adults and children, children’s nature
books, and a variety of our naturalists’ favorite reads will be on hand.
Show support for your Nature Center by kicking off the holiday shopping with
us. A pre-order form is available on www.YorkCountyParks.org, and at Nixon
Park Nature Center and Rudy Park. A limited quantity will also be available

Celebration

Get out of the house to celebrate trees and all the things they do for us.
There will be crafts for the kids, educational displays for both children
and adults, and guest speakers with fascinating tree topics for adults.
After browsing through the tree party, pick up some tree-themed snacks,
gifts, and nature books for children and adults on your holiday list. NF,

Saturday, November 5; Aliens Invade the Trees!
Nixon Park, 2:30pm
As part of our tree celebration, Tim Abbey, a Commercial Horticulture
Educator at Penn State Extension, will do an inside presentation on alien
pests infecting our native trees. He’ll tell the stories of common pests
that could be lurking in trees in your backyard and newer critters to watch
out for. NF, NR.
Sunday, November 6; Welcoming Wildlife
Nixon Park, 2:30–4pm
Trees provide nesting sites, food, storm shelter, hibernacula, and more.
Tina Alban, Forest Nursery Operations Manager at PA Department of
Conservation and Natural Resources, will do a presentation on trees and the
wildlife they attract. Find out more about the trees in your back yard!

Seneca Indian Jerry Dietz will arrive in authentic dress to delight you with
his age-old animal tales. These traditional tales are told only after the
leaves fall from the trees, and have a meaning for all ages. This program is

Project FeederWatch
Nixon Park, 8:30am–4:30pm
Project FeederWatch is a citizen science program where participants count
the number and species of birds visiting the feeders from November 15
through early April. The collected data is forwarded to Cornell Laboratory
of Ornithology and becomes part of a nation-wide data set which tracks
winter bird population trends. Beginners are welcome. ADA accessible. One
hour every other week commitment. If you are

Wednesday, November 16; Antlerless Deer Permits
Nixon Park, 5:30–6:30pm
Permits will be handed out by lottery. Hunters must have an antlerless deer
license. A total of 50 permits per two-day period for Kain and 33 per
two-day period for Rocky Ridge (covering November 29 & 30 and December 5 &
6) are available.
