August 1: County Park: Hunting Permits Available

August 2: Nature Camp for Adults
Nixon Park, 8:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m.

One-day camp created for adults who long for their share of time in nature.  Join park staff for a wide range of hikes and activities focusing on wildlife.  This camp will include a bird walk, a landscaping for wildlife program and demonstrations, and an exploration of Lake Redman by canoe.  Lunch and snacks will also be included.  Ages 21 and above. August 2: Eight for Eight Hike, Spring Valley Park
Spring Valley Line Rd., 9–11:00 a.m.

Hike along the East Branch of the Codorus Creek and see the old walls and rockpiles of farms of yesterday. NF,, pre-register by  calling 428-1961.


August 2: Garden Tours
Rudy Park, Administrative Headquarters, 9 a.m.–12 noon

Penn State Master Gardeners will give tours and answer questions about the many new annual and perennial flowers, vegetables, fruits and herbs planted in trail beds. NF, NPR.


August 2: Family Fishing Program
Kain Park, Spartan Road Parking Lot, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Learn to fish with the PA Fish and Boat Commission. No license required. All equipment will be provided. NF, Pre-register at 428-1961.


August 3: Wallace-Cross Mill Open House
Wallace-Cross Mill, 1:30–4:30 p.m.

Explore the past.  Tour guides will guide you through the inner workings of a restored water-powered gristmill and explain its history and the role mills played in our communities.  All three floors contain displays about milling.  Throughout the summer public open houses will be held every Sunday. August 3: Incredible Insects
Nixon Park, 2:30-4 p.m.

Local insect authority Ryan Bridge will lead an indoor in-depth look at insects.  A close-up view of both local and exotic specimens will reveal an incredible array of creatures both amazing and beautiful. For ages 6 and up. NF, NPR.


August 5-8: Nature Discovery Program II
Nixon Park, 1–3:30 a.m.

For ages 7-8. An interactive week combining both recreation and education.  The children will investigate various natural history topics using hikes, projects, games and special presentations with park staff. $55, please call 840-7440 to pre-register.


August 5: Sunset Scramble Bike Ride
Rail Trail, Glatfelter Station Parking Area, 6:30–9 p.m.

Take a 12 to 15 mile moderately-paced ride for exercise and make friends with fellow riders.  See historic structures such as Howard Tunnel, Hanover Junction Train Station and New Freedom Train Station.  Each rider must have a helmet, a light and water.  Bring money for a snack along the way. August 6: Fox Story Time: "Fireflies"
Rudy Park,  6:30-8:30 p.m.

Join park volunteer Jodi Sulpizio, to learn more about the insect that lights up the night, fireflies.  Participants will enjoy a story and a firefly-watching hike.  This program is for a parent to spend with a child ages 4-7. $5, please call 428-1961 to pre-register.


August 9: Eight for Eight Hike, Heritage Rail Trail Park

Hike to see Howard Tunnel.  Learn about the railroad and listen to a waterfall along the way. NF, pre-register by calling 428-1961.


August 9: YCAS Public Star Watch
John Rudy Observatory, 8 p.m.

Come to the observatory and see planets, the Moon, galaxies and nebulae and learn some interesting facts about each object.  Also learn how to use your new telescope or get hints on what to purchase.  Please bring a blanket or chair to sit on.  Event is held with partly cloudy or clear skies. While the Olympians compete in Bejing, join Jeri Jones, Parks Program Coordinator, and test your athletic skills against the animal world. Ages 8 and up. NF, NPR.

August 10: Moonlight Boat Ride
Kain Park, Lake Redman Activity Area, 8:30 p.m.

Take a quiet ride on Lake Redman after dark to explore the world of nocturnal life. Explore the many inlets of the lake, but keep your eyes open for the bats!! A 30-minute astronomical tour around the sky is included. After boating, participants will be treated to ice cream sundaes and other refreshments. You may use a County-owned rowboat, pedal boat, canoe or kayak or your private boat. Participants need to bring their own flashlight for each boat. Floatation devices and rowing implements are furnished. $20/couple if using a County-owned boat or $15/couple for a private boat. Add $2 for each individual. August 11–15: Archaeology Week II
Nixon Park, 9 a.m.–3 p.m.

For ages 9–12. Co-sponsored with the York County Heritage Trust, this working week will be rewarding as students do “real archaeology” in Raab Park, site of the 19th century York Iron Company Mine. Each day, students will also be treated to special themes or tours provided by the Heritage Trust. Tours include the Colonial Courthouse, Gates House, Plough Tavern and the Agricultural and Industrial Museum (AIM). Students will also construct displays of artifacts found in Raab Park for exhibits at both Nixon Park and AIM. Transportation provided by Red Lion Bus Company. Students must supply their own lunch and beverage. $125, pre-registration required by calling 840-7440.

August 14: Raab Park Archaeology Walk
Raab Park, 6–8 p.m.

Take a 1.5-mile stroll through history to visit the remains of the York Iron Company Mine. York County Parks Archaeology Week students will be in the middle of a hard-working schedule to uncover more of the mine’s history. Learn how archaeologists carefully work to record the information found. The existence of the narrow-gauge railroad and several mining structures are planned to be unearthed. August 14: Moonlight Bike Ride
Rail Trail, Glen Rock Parking Area, 8:30 p.m.

Take a 9-mile ride under a bright moon detecting nocturnal life, hearing folklore and railroad stories, and astronomy.  Light refreshments will be served at the conclusion of the ride. $5, children under the age of 12 are free, NPR

Join naturalist Jack Hubley and his furry, feathered, scalely and multilegged friends to learn about common but not commonly seen Pennsylvania animals. Ages 6 and up. NF, pre-register at 428-1961.

August 19: Spring/Summer Botany Class
Rocky Ridge Park, Wildlife Pavilions Parking Lot, 6–7:30 p.m.

Join biologist Tim Falkenstein for a series of four classes throughout the summer and fall to learn how to identify a variety of plants ranging from forest trees to wetland plants to exotic species. Informational handouts will be available. Participants should be prepared to walk short distances on the trails. NF, NPR

August 23: Canoe Tour and Lake Clean Up

Join a park volunteer and naturalist Rose-Anna Behr for a paddle-powered tour of the lake. We will look for animals, observe aquatic animals and birds, and learn about plants and water quality issues that affect them. No experience necessary. Please dress for the weather. $5/person with own canoe, $10/person if you need a canoe, pre-registration required by calling 428-1961.

August 24: Petal Pounding
Nixon Park 2:30–4 p.m.

Join April Ferree for the art and craft of pounding flowers. Without the fuss of using paint or ink, you can use leaves and flowers to make lasting images. Bring a hammer, flowers or leaves to pound, and any fabric you would like to make images on (i.e., t-shirt, table linens, wall hangings, wrapping paper, etc.). We provide step-by-step instruction, greeting card and small tote bag. $5, pre-register by calling 428-1961.
